Chandi Prasad Bhatt to be conferred Gandhi Peace Prize
New Delhi, July 14 (IBNS): President Pranab Mukherjee will present the Gandhi Peace Prize for the year 2013 to environmentalist Chandi Prasad Bhatt on Tuesday at a function at Rashtrapati Bhavan here.
The 80-year-old is an environmentalist and social activist, who founded Dasholi Gram Swarajya Sangh (DGSS) in Gopeshwar in 1964, which later became a mother-organization to the Chipko Movement
He has been awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership in 1982, followed by the Padma Bhushan in 2005.
The Gandhi Peace Prize was instituted by the Government of India in 1995 on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
This annual award is given to individuals and institutions for their contributions towards social, economic and political transformation through non-violence and other Gandhian methods.
It carries a plaque, citation and an amount of Rs. one crore.
