Chandigarh University 'video leak': Youth detained from Shimla amid protests on Mohali campus

Chandigarh: Shimla Police have arrested a male who allegedly shared objectionable videos of girl students of a private university in Mohali on social media.

Sanjay Kundu, Director General of Police Himachal Pradesh, confirmed the development and tweeted: "Chandigarh University case.Himachal Pradesh Police reacted to request of Punjab Police with sensitivity & professionalism. We nabbed the accused. Congrats to Dr Monika, SP Shimla & her team for great professional work."

The accused was allegedly arrested from Rohru town.

The accused has been detained for now and brought to Shimla. He would be handed over to a Punjab police team which would reach Shimla soon, police sources told The Tribune.

The girl student involved in sharing videos of Chandigarh University in Mohali had reportedly said she had made videos of some girls and sent them to a youth in Shimla who allegedly uploaded those on social media. The girl was arrested by the police, the newspaper reported.

Hundreds of students of Chandigarh University held massive protests on the varsity’s campus on Saturday late night allegedly after some videos of girl students taking baths in the hostel were leaked and made viral on the internet. Protests were also held on Sunday.

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann earlier in the day ordered a probe into the incident.

The university authorities have denied any videos being shot and made viral.

“When girls are involved in the matter, it becomes very sensitive. No male is allowed in the girl’s hostel and even the maintenance staff is allowed inside with a pass and warden accompanies them. The matter is under investigation and let’s not come to conclusion now. The girl had recorded her personal videos and shared them with her friend. She has confessed it to us,” said the dean student welfare (DSW) of Chandigarh University in a press conference Sunday.

“This is a serious matter, an investigation is underway. I am here to assure the parents of all students that the accused won't be spared. The warden will be questioned in connection with the matter. I have instructed the SSP to conduct strictly question the warden about those involved in the matter,” said Manisha Gulati, Chairperson, Punjab State Women Commission.
