Delhi elections: Miffed BJP leaders protest over tickets denial
New Delhi, Jan 20 (IBNS): Supporters of Delhi unit chief Satish Upadhyay shouted slogans and staged a sit-in protest outside the BJP office in the national capital on Tuesday over the denial of election ticket to the party's top leadership here.
BJP leader Dhir Singh Bidhuri and four block presidents from Okhla have also quit the party over denial of ticket to him, reports said.
Upadhyay's supporters raised slogans demanding a seat for him.
He appealed to his supporters to calm down and focus on the elections.
He said it was his decision not to contest elections.
"This is not the time to protest but we have to work very hard to ensure we get a clear majority in Delhi," Upadhyay said.
"It is my own decision. The Parliamentary Board asked me and I conveyed them my decision, he added.
On Monday, the BJP released it list of candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections in Delhi and said Upadhyay will not be contesting the elections.
Many party members are miffed with the BJP's central leadership for not getting tickets to contest the election.
Angry supporters of another ticket aspirant Sikha Rai, who is Vice President of Delhi BJP unit, also staged a protest at the Delhi BJP office.
Upadhyay was heckled outside the BJP office here.
Later, police interfered and forcefully removed the rebels from party office.
Delhi goes to polls on Feb 7 and the results will be declared on Feb 10.
