Delhi High Court fines media houses who named the eight-year old Kathua rape case victim
New Delhi, Apr 18 (IBNS): The Delhi High Court on Wednesday ordered select media houses to deposit rupees 10 lakh as penalty for naming the eight-year-old who was allegedly gang-raped and murdered in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, reports said.
The money has to be paid to the state's rape victims compensation funds.
According to reports, the media houses that named the victim admitted their mistake and said they were under the impression that they could name the victim as she was dead.
Last week, a Bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C. Hari Shankar took suo motu cognisance of the publication of photographs and the name of the child during the reportage of the alleged incident, The Hindu reported.
The High Court sought the response of The Times of India, The Hindu, The Statesman, The Pioneer, The Navbharat Times, NDTV, Firstpost, The Week, The Republic TV, The Deccan Chronicle, India TV and The Indian Express, reports said.
On Tuesday, all the BJP ministers in the Jammu and Kashmir government have resigned.
