ED summons Mahua Moitra for interrogation in alleged foreign exchange violation case

New Delhi: Trinamool Congress leader and disqualified Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra is facing fresh troubles as the Enforcement Directorate has sent her summons for questioning in an alleged foreign exchange violation case.

The summons has been issued in relation to alleged violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act, and Moitra has been asked to appear at the agency's office in New Delhi on Monday.

The Trinamool leader was ousted from the Lok Sabha in December last year following an Ethics Committee report on purported 'cash-for-query' accusations against her.

She challenged the expulsion in the Supreme Court, where her petition is under consideration.

Moitra is currently under investigation by the CBI, which is conducting a preliminary inquiry into the allegations against her on Lokpal’s direction.

In a preliminary inquiry, the agency is not authorised to arrest or conduct searches, but it can gather information, examine documents, and question the Trinamool leader.

Trinamool Congress chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said Moitra's expulsion was a clear case of "vendetta politics" by the BJP, a party that has frequently been the target of the fiery leader's criticisms.

She accused the BJP of destroying democracy and asserted that Moitra will win “the battle” as people will give a befitting reply with their votes.
