Election Commission announces date for Vice-Presidential elections

| @indiablooms | Aug 01, 2025, at 02:24 pm

New Delhi/IBNS: The Vice-Presidential elections will be held in the country on September 9, the Election Commission of India (ECI) said on Friday, media reports said.

The notification will be issued on August 7. The last date for nominations is August 21.

The result will be declared on the day of polling, the poll body said.

However, the polling will be held only if the government and Opposition fail to arrive at a consensus candidate.

The Vice-President is elected by an electoral college in a secret ballot using the single transferable vote (STV) system and proportional representation.

The electoral college is composed of members of both the House of Parliament. Unlike in the Presidential polls, the state assemblies are not allowed to vote.

The Vice-President, who is elected for five years and can be re-elected, is the ex-officio chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

The V-P post fell vacant after Jagdeep Dhankhar announced a shocking resignation last month.

Dhankhar had cited health issues as the reason behind his decision to step down.
