Former Maharashtra CM Ashok Chavan joins BJP a day after quitting Congress

Mumbai/IBNS: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inducted former Congress leader Ashok Chavan to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Mumbai on Tuesday.

Chavan, a former Maharashtra Chief Minister, quit the Congress on Monday.

Welcoming Chavan to the party, Fadnavis said, "Several tall leaders of other parties are joining BJP witnessing the way Prime Minister Narendra Modi-ji developed the country and has changed the picture of India."

Chavan, 65, remained the Chief Minister from 2008 to 2010.

In 2010, the Congress had asked him to step down over corruption allegations linked to the Adarsh Housing Society Scam.

In 2014, Chavan won from Nanded constituency of Maharashtra despite the Modi wave in the Lok Sabha elections.

Chavan's resignation comes days after senior leader Baba Siddique dumped Congress and joined the Ajit Pawar camp of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
