From silver screen to power game: Vijay’s TVK rocks Tamil Nadu poll trends

Tamil Nadu’s political landscape witnessed a dramatic shift on Monday as matinee star Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as a major force, leading in 105 seats as counting of Assembly votes continued.

The southern state, long dominated by Dravidian politics and the electoral rivalry between the DMK and AIADMK, appeared to be entering a new political phase.

The AIADMK was leading in 71 seats, according to the latest trends, marking a strong comeback in the tightly contested race.

Meanwhile, the ruling DMK, led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, was trailing its main rivals with leads in 57 constituencies, despite an early advantage during counting.

In a significant development, TVK chief Vijay was ahead in both Perambur and Tiruchirapalli (East) constituencies, signalling a strong debut performance for his party.

In another setback for the DMK, Stalin was trailing in Kolathur—long considered his bastion. The DMK president has represented the constituency since 2011 and secured a massive victory there in 2021 by defeating AIADMK’s Aadhi Rajaram with a margin of 70,384 votes.
