General Mukund Narwane is the new Army chief
New Delhi/IBNS: General Mukund Narwane on Tuesday became the 28th chief of Indian Army. He was handed over the charge by outgoing chief of Army General Bipin Rawat here at the Raksha Bhawan.
After a farewell guard of honour, General Bipin Rawat said: "I am confident he (General Naravane) will take Army to greater heights".
General Narwane had been appointed the Vice-Chief of the Army in September last.
He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy. He was commissioned into the 7th battalion, the Sikh Light Infantry Regiment in June 1980.
Prior to his appointment as the Vice-Chief of Army he was heading the Eastern Command of the Army which guardss nearly 4,000-km Indo-China border.
During the course of his 37 years of service, General Narwane has served in numerous command and staff appointments in peace and field. He has served in Counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir and Northeast India, as well as the Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka during Operation Pawan.
During his career, he has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (2019), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (2017), Sena Medal, Vishist Seva Medal (2015), and the CoAS commendation card for his service.
