Harnaaz Sandhu is the first Sikh woman to win Miss Universe title

New Delhi: Chandigarh-based actress Harnaaz Sandhu has become the first Sikh woman to win the Miss Universe title, making her community and India proud.

Lara Dutta had won the title last time in 2000.

Indian PM Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian model for the achievement.

He tweeted: "Congratulations to Harnaaz Sandhu on being crowned Miss Universe. Best wishes to her for her future endeavours."

She replied: "Thankyou so much Sir."

 The 70th Miss Universe event was held in Eilat city of Israel.

The Punjabi model won the showpiece event by beating Paraguay's Nadia Ferreira and South Africa's Lalela Mswane.

Bollywood actress Sushmita Sen had won the first Miss Universe title for India in 1994.
