Independence Day: PM Modi’s big youth pitch— AI training, free coaching amid exam row and job concerns

Addressing the nation from the iconic Red Fort, Modi announced several initiatives, including AI training for youth and free online coaching for competitive examinations, as India progresses towards the goal of becoming a Viksit Bharat by 2047.

AI training for 1 crore youth

Modi announced a nationwide programme to provide AI skill training to 1 crore (10 million) youth over the next year.

Speaking on the AI training initiative, the Prime Minister said, "We have resolved that, over the next year, 1 crore youth will receive AI skill training, equipping India’s young talent to lead the world in the field of AI. Before 2014, India’s bioeconomy was valued at just ₹60,000 crore. Today, it has surged to ₹20 lakh crore."

Free online coaching for competitive exams

Modi also announced a network to provide free online coaching for various competitive examinations, particularly addressing concerns faced by poor and middle-class families.

"Taking into account the concerns of poor and middle-class families, we are about to establish a network for providing free online coaching for various exams for the youth," Modi said.

India eyes 100 GW nuclear power target by 2047

The Prime Minister announced that India will aim to expand its nuclear power generation capacity to 100 GW by 2047 as part of its energy security push.

5-8 new semiconductor plants

The government is targeting five to eight new semiconductor manufacturing plants over the next 7-8 years to strengthen domestic chip production and build India's semiconductor ecosystem.

Nationwide sports talent hunt

Modi announced a nationwide programme to identify and nurture young sporting talent, with a particular focus on producing athletes capable of competing at the Olympic level.

Civil defence reforms

The Prime Minister also announced measures aimed at strengthening India's civil defence preparedness and response capabilities.

‘Saptdhara’ vision for Viksit Bharat

Modi outlined a ‘Saptdhara’ vision for Viksit Bharat, focusing on seven streams of development encompassing areas such as youth, technology, manufacturing, energy and national strength, with the goal of building a developed India by 2047.

Push for defence self-reliance

Highlighting India's growing defence capabilities, Modi said defence production has increased nearly fourfold over the past 12 years.

He also stressed the need for indigenous capabilities in areas including hypersonic technology, drones, counter-drone systems and the Sudarshan Chakra air-defence system.

Modi warns against ‘dimagi naxals’

Modi said armed Naxalism had been eliminated while warning against what he termed “dimagi naxals”, framing ideological extremism as a continuing threat to the country.

Why are the announcements  significant?

In the current political context, Modi’s youth-focused announcements are particularly significant because they come shortly after a major wave of youth-led protests over exam leaks, recruitment concerns, unemployment and access to education, which put the government under considerable political pressure and led to Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation.

Against that backdrop, the promise of free online coaching for competitive exams directly addresses one of the immediate grievances of students, while the commitment to train 1 crore youth in AI shifts the conversation towards future-oriented skills and employment.

Politically, therefore, the announcements can be seen as an attempt to rebuild confidence among young voters and respond to the growing demand for jobs, fair examinations and affordable education, while simultaneously presenting the government’s longer-term Viksit Bharat vision as an opportunity-driven alternative.

The emphasis on AI, semiconductors, manufacturing and sports also allows the government to move the political narrative from youth grievances to youth empowerment and opportunity.
