Jagdeep Dhankhar takes oath as India's 14th Vice President

New Delhi/IBNS: Former West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar took oath as the 14th Vice President of India Thursday.

Dhankhar's swearing-in ceremony was attended by President Droupadi Murmu and his predecessor Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, top Union Ministers and others.

Dhankhar, who was the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate in the polls, has defeated Opposition's joint candidate Margaret Alva comfortably by 346 votes.

Dhankhar secured 74.36%. He has the highest winning margin in the last six Vice Presidential elections held since 1997.

The returning officer of the election said of the total 780 electors, 725 cast their ballots but 15 votes were found to be invalid.

The voting turnout was 92.94%, he said, adding that a candidate needed 356 votes to get elected.

The Vice President is also the ex officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
