Justice SN Dhingra to head SIT to probe 1984 anti-Sikh riots

New Delhi, Jan 11 (IBNS): Justice SN Dhingra will head the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the 1984 anti-Sikh riots which took place following former Indian Prime Minister late Indira Gandhi's assassination, media report said.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered the constitution of a SIT to re-look into 186 cases related to the anti-Sikh riots.

The directive from the top court came after it has found that the existing SIT, formed by the NDA government in 2015, did not function properly.

The apex court's action follows a report by a supervisory committee of retired justices KPS Radharishnan and JM Panchal  stating that  out of the 293 cases related to  anti-Sikh riots, 186 were closed by the original SIT without investigation.

Along with Justice Dhingra, the new SIT will include one serving and one retired IPS officer.

The anti-Sikh riots had erupted in different parts of the country following Gandhi's assassination by her Sikh security guards in the wake of the army operation in Amritsar's Golden Temple to flush out terrorists. The pogrom claimed at least 3,000 lives across the country.
