Panaji, Nov 8 (IBNS): Goa Health Minister Laxmikant Parsekar was on Saturday sworn in as the state's next Chief Minister.

Goa Governor Mridula Sinha administered the oath-ceremony at the Raj Bhawan.

Earlier, BJP leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy announced that Parsekar has been chosen unanimously as the chief ministerial candidate during the legislature party meeting in the state capital.

Rudy who along with veteran BJP leader BS Yeddyurappa has been sent to Goa by the party's central leaders as observers.

Out-going CM Parrikar also attended the meeting to choose his successor.

"I am very much happy to be unanimously elected to the post of chief minister," said Parsekar, who is a legislator from Mandrem constituency.

Parsekar was one of the front-runners for the post, with Deputy Chief Minister Francis D'Souza and Assembly Speaker Rajendra Arlekar also doing rounds.

Francis D'Souza will continue as deputy chief minister in the new government headed by Laxmikant Parsekar.

The swearing-in of new Chief Minister became imminent as Manohar Parrikar quit the post earlier today.

Media reported that Parrikar faxed his resignation letter to Governor on Saturdayafternoon, after meeting the Archbishop.

With Parrikar's resignation, the entire state cabinet comprising 12 ministers was temporarily dissolved for a few hours.

The fresh cabinet took charge along with new CM Parsekar.

Parrikar is heading to Centre, where he will be inducted as a cabimet Minister, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union cabinet will be expanded on Sunday.

It has been learnt that Parrikar is tipped to be next Defence Minister.

He will take the reins from Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who has been handling the defence portfolio as an additional charge.

"I give you a guarantee that if I do get the Defence Ministry, I will be clean, transparent and open. On November 9, I will complete 20 years in politics, without a single stain or allegation against me," Parrikar told NDTV on Friday evening.

But prior to that, Parrikar held one last Goa cabinet's meeting as a CM on Thursday night, where he reportedly broke down in front of his colleagues.

"I am going to Delhi because they have asked me to take up the assignment. I will always be available for Goa whenever required," an emotional Parrikar told party legislators.

Later, talking to reporters, he said: "I am disturbed at leaving the post. But the nation is bigger than state for me. I have a mixed feeling".

Parrikar added he would miss the "Goan fish curry-rice".

Media reported that Parrikar may be elevated to Parliament as a Rajya Sabha member from Lucknow.
