Modi, Sharif discuss terror and cooperation

While India said its concerns on terrorism from Pakistan soil was conveyed, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif told reporters by reading out a statement: "I had pointed out that we both were in the beginning of a clear mandate from our respective nations. This provides an opportunity  to fulfil the hopes of 1.5 billion people of the two countries who want us to focus on people and welfare. We had talks in warm and cordial atmosphere."

"Our common agenda is not possible without peace and security. Consequently, it is important for us to work together. Let us change confrontation into cooperation. My government stands ready and is in the spirit of cooperation."

"We owe our people to overcome a mistrust and enmity. PM Modi reciprocated my sentiments. He stated it was incumbent on both of us to work together for the common objective - peace and development. Let us carry forward our bilateral agenda."

"I leave this historic city with a strong sense that the people of our two countries will work together for peace and cooperation. Two foreign secretaries will be meeting soon," said Sharif.

The two leaders agreed that the foreign secretaries of two neighbours would meet and take forward talks.

"The Prime Minister underlined our concerns relating to terrorism," said India's foreign secretary Sujatha Singh in a press conference after the meeting.

She said the Indian PM conveyed that Pakistan must abide by its commitment to not let its soil be used against India.

Modi also asked Sharif to ensure speedy progress of the case and conviction of those responsible for the 26/11 attack, said Singh

She said the two PMs agreed that the foreign secretaries of the two countries will be in touch to look at the way forward.

She said India and Pakistan could go for immediate trade normalization.

According to sources, Modi had a five-point agenda for his talks with Sharif.

One report said the issue of terrorist and underworld don Dawood Ibrahim also figured but there is no official confirmation yet.

The Indian foreign secretary said she would not comment in detail about the discussions. She said the meeting was very friendly and cordial and both sides tried to address each other's concerns.

She said India wants friendly relations with Pakistan but for such relations to proceed terror and violence should be brought to an end.

Sharif was present at the swearing-in ceremony of Modi on Monday evening along with other SAARC leaders.

Sharif was accompanied by National Security and Foreign Affairs Advisor Sartaj Aziz, Special Assistant to PM Ambassador Tariq Fatemi and Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhary during his meeting with Modi.
