Modi's victory to boost India-Japan ties and reshape Asian strategic landscape, says Japan Times piece

New Delhi, May 25 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi's landslide victory in the Lok Sabha polls will strengthen ties between India and Japan, The Japan Times said in an opinion piece.

The victory, as the report said, "will help cement the Japan-India relationship as Asia’s fastest growing and facilitate a military logistics pact to allow access to each other’s bases. The Japan-India entente is a central pillar of U.S. President Donald Trump’s strategy for a “free and open Indo-Pacific,” a concept authored by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe".

Immediately after Modi's victory, Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had tweeted to congratulate the Indian Prime Minister.

"PM of Japan @AbeShinzo called PM @narendramodi and congratulated him for the victory in the 2019 General Elections. Both leaders reiterated their commitment towards further strengthening the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership," Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Raveesh Kumar had tweeted.

The opinion piece which was written by Brahma Chellaney stated, "Modi has forged a special relationship with Japan and built personal rapport with Abe. The two leaders have already set in motion the process for the Indian and Japanese militaries to clinch a logistics-sharing agreement, formally known as the Acquisition and Cross Servicing Agreement. A logistics-sharing accord has become imperative for the two militaries, given the number of joint maneuvers they hold, including three-way exercises involving the U.S. Navy in the Indian and Pacific oceans.

As Abe has contended, Japan’s ties with India hold “the greatest potential of any bilateral relationship anywhere in the world.” A deeper India-Japan partnership under Modi and Abe could potentially reshape the Asian strategic landscape."

Narendra Modi has returned to power with a bigger mandate in 2019. In the General Elections in India, Modi's political outfit, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), won 303 seats, trumping the Opposition.

The BJP government has returned to power with a bigger mandate in 2019.
