Mumbai rains: Life crippled, Dabbawalas suspend work, Navy called in
Mumbai, July 10 (IBNS): Relentless pounding of rains for the past five days left Mumbai and its suburbs battered as the iconic dabbawalas suspended their services for Tuesday with many areas going under water and vehicular movement and train services being badly hit, media reports said.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said in a tweet that in all eleven places have been waterlogged. "Disaster Management cell are all concerned Depts are working hard to provide every possible assistance to Mumbaikars," he said.
NDTV quoted the Chief Minister as saying that Navy has been brought in and they, along with the Disaster Management Cell and other departments are working on dealing with the situation.
Vehicles on many roads were seen crawling because of the rainfall and low visibility with most of the people being forced to stay indoors.
According to reports, some trains have been cancelled while others are running late by 10 to 15 minutes as tracks are waterlogged after heavy overnight rain which was five times the average rainfall and the highest this season.
Railway authorities said suburban trains services between Vasai and Virar near Mumbai have been suspended due to the accumulation of rainwater on the rail tracks. Local train services between south Mumbai's busy Churchgate station and Vasai are delayed.
The Western Railway said in a tweet that due to incessant heavy downpour, the water level at railway tracks at Nallasopara has further risen to 200 mm to 460 mm making it impossible to run trains bet Nallasopara and Virar. "Area outside & along rail tracks is heavily flooded & water flowing on the tracks. DRM, Mumbai Central at the site," it said.
Another tweet said that services between Bhayander and Virar have been suspended due to heavy rains and waterlogging. Trains between Bhayander and Churchgate are running with some delay in schedule.
Schools in the neighbouring districts of Thane and Palghar will be closed on Tuesday because of the rain. Maharashtra Education Minister Vinod Tawde tweeted that school principals in Mumbai have been asked to assess the situation in their areas and take a call on the closure of schools,
The meteorological department said that the city and the surrounding areas such as Raigad, Thane and Palghar are expected to receive more rainfall.
