New Delhi/IBNS: The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nominee CP Radhakrishnan has been announced as the new Vice-President of India.

Radhakrishnan won the V-P election by 452 first preference votes.

He defeated INDIA bloc nominee former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy, who secured 300 first preference votes.

The election was held on Tuesday weeks after Jagdeep Dhankhar made a shock exit from the post.

Dhankhar resigned as the V-P citing health reasons while several political quarters suspected something fishy in the entire episode.

The election for the V-P election started sharp at 10 am with Prime Minister Narendra Modi casting the first vote.

The PM was followed by other ministers and representatives from the opposition camp to the polling booth at the Parliament House here.

Who is CP Radhakrishnan?

A politician from Tamil Nadu, Radhakrishnan was a member of the BJP.

He is currently serving as the Maharashtra Governor. He assumed the post on July 31, 2024.

In 1998, Radhakrishnan was elected as a Lok Sabha MP from Coimbatore on a BJP ticket. He was re-elected from the same constituency the following year.

He served as the BJP's Tamil Nadu state unit president from 2001 to 2005.

A member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Radhakrishnan previously served as the Jharkhand Governor.

He was also given the additional charge of Governor of Telangana and Lt. Governor of Puducherry.
