Parliament's first session after polls begins, PM Modi says 'every word of Opposition matters'

"I would urge all opposition parties to drop the thought of numbers (seats). Each and every word of the Opposition is valuable to the government," Modi said as the monsoon session of the parliament began on Monday. "An active and able Opposition is must in a democracy," he added.

Also the Prime Minister highlighted the BJP's poll success in the Lok Sabha polls. "After a long time, a government has returned to power for the second consecutive term and that too with a bigger margin," Modi said.

"Will have an opportunity to meet new elected members," he added.

In the Lok Sabha elections 2019, the Congress appeared to be the second largest party with 52 seats as opposed to the BJP's 303. However, the Congress is not officially the opposition party due to lack of necessary numbers.

This is the first Parliament session since the new government was formed last month. 

This session, which will end on Jul 26, assumes significance as Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Budget on July 5.

One of the key bills which is likely to be tabled in the Rajya Sabha is the Triple Talaq Bill, which will end the practice of instant divorce given to women in Muslim community.

On Sunday,  Modi attended an all-party meeting to seek support on the smooth running of parliament. He described the meeting as 'fruitful'.
