Patna/IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday transferred Rs. 10,000 to each of 75 lakh women under a new scheme in poll-bound Bihar.

The PM launched the Rs. 7,500-crore Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana as a part of the NDA government's new initiative to woo the women voters.

Modi launched the scheme virtually from Delhi and the event was joined by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, his deputy Samrat Chaudhary and other ministers from the state capital Patna.

Speaking at the event, the PM said, "While this process was underway, I was thinking about how big and important a step the government of Nitish ji has taken today for the sisters and daughters of Bihar.

"When any sister or daughter engages in employment or self-employment, her dreams gain new wings, and her respect in society increases even more."

"The Chief Minister Mahila Rojgar Yojana has also given new strength to the central government's Lakhpati Didi campaign.
The central government has set a target of creating 3 crore Lakhpati Didis in the country.

"So far, more than 2 crore sisters have become Lakhpati Didis. Their hard work has changed the village, changed the society, and also changed the status of the family," he added.

Objectives of the scheme

Under the scheme, an amount of ₹10 thousand will be given as the first installment as financial assistance to one woman from each family to pursue employment of her choice.

After the women start employment, additional financial assistance up to ₹2 lakh will be provided as per requirement after assessment.

Eligibility/Qualification

Under the scheme, "family" means husband, wife, and their unmarried children. Unmarried adult women whose parents are not alive will be considered a nuclear family for the purposes of the scheme and will be provided benefits as per the rules.

All members (one woman from one family) associated with self-help groups in urban areas will be eligible for the benefits of this scheme.

Before adding women who are not currently members of Self Help Groups in urban areas as members, the following has to be ensured keeping in mind the definition of family under the scheme:

A.  The age of the applicant should be 18-60 years.

b.  The applicant herself or her husband should not be in the category of income tax payer.

c.  The applicant herself or her husband should not be in Government service (regular/contract).
