President Droupadi Murmu to address joint session of Parliament today
New Delhi/IBNS: President Droupadi Murmu will on Thursday address the joint session of Parliament for the first time since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) returned to power for the third consecutive term.
After Murmu's address, a motion of thanks will be moved in either House of Parliament.
The Lok Sabha session began on Monday while the Rajya Sabha will begin on Thursday.
Meanwhile on Wednesday, NDA nominee Om Birla was elected as the Lok Sabha Speaker for the second consecutive term, piping INDIA bloc's candidate, Congress MP K Suresh in voice vote.
Rare election for Lok Sabha Speaker's post
Lok Sabha, the lower house of Parliament, witnessed a rare election for the Speaker's post after the government and opposition failed to reach a consensus after the incumbent refused to give up the Deputy Speaker's post, which was demanded by the rival parties.
INDIA bloc, the Opposition camp, demanded the Deputy Speaker's post in exchange for its support to NDA candidate Om Birla, who is elected from Rajasthan's Kota.
After the government and opposition reached no consensus, the INDIA alliance fielded Congress MP K Suresh as its candidate despite knowing the ruling coalition had the numbers under its belt.
