Prez bestows Bharat Ratna om ex-PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee

New Delhi, Mar 27 (IBNS): President Pranab Mukherjee on Friday conferred the Bharat Ratna on former Indian prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee here.

In a special gesture, the President conferred the award in a simple ceremony held at the residence of Vajpayee.

Vice President of India Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Narendra Modi; former President APJ Abdul Kalam; ex- Prime Minister Manmohan Singh; Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh; senior members of the Cabinet; several Chief Ministers; leaders of political parties; members of Vajpayee’s family and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.

The Rashtrapati Bhavan's official twitter handle said: "#PresidentMukherjee conferred Bharat Ratna on Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee this evening."

Modi earlier tweeted: "Departing from convention,Rashtrapatiji is going to Atalji's residence to confer him the Bharat Ratna. This gesture reflects grace & dignity."

BJP president Amit Shah tweeted: "Congratulations to PM @narendramodi ji & Government of India for much awaited Honor."

Vajpayee,90, thrice became the country's prime minister. The Bharaitya Janata Party has long demanded Bharat Ratna for him.
