Dumka, Jharkhand, Jul 4 (IBNS) A teenager allegedly committed suicide in Jharkhand's Dumka district on Friday after her parents refused to construct a toilet at their home.

Reports said the 17-year-old girl had made repeated requests to her parents for a toilet at home, but they were turned down.

The parents reportedly  wanted to save money for her marriage.

Ashamed to defecating in the fields, the class 12 student committed suicide when she was alone at home.

"My daughter told me that I  have to travel so far for a toilet in this heat, so construct a toilet first," her mother has been quoted  as saying.

"For many days, she was asking for a toilet in their house. The mother told her that they are poor and the first priority is her marriage. After this everybody went back to their normal routine and this incident happened,"  Vipul Shukla, Superintendent of Police, Dumka, said.

Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh tweeted on Saturday morning, "A girl in Jharkhand committed suicide as her parents refused to build toilet ! India as a Nation must wake up and build toilets on priority. (sic)"
