The Rotary International District 3291 has condemned the rape and murder of a PG trainee doctor in Kolkata's state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and called for zero tolerance against any form of abuse or violence against medical practitioners.

The organisation demanded immediate, swift, and decisive action against those responsible for the crime which triggered massive protests across the country.

In the statement signed by Dr. Krishnendu Gupta, the current District Governor (2024-2025), Dr. Ramendu Homchaudhuri, the District Governor for 2025-2026, and Tapas Bhattacharya, the District Governor for 2026-2027, the organisation sought a Central Law specifically addressing 'Violence against Doctors' with provisions to ensure a safe workplace for healthcare providers.

The statement expressed solidarity with doctors and the Indian Medical Association (IMA) during these challenging times.

"It also urges all members of RID 3291 to support the cause against violence towards doctors," the statement said.

The statement calls for a broader social change to reduce conflict, violence, and crime, and to protect healthcare professionals, who are seen as protectors during times of distress and disease.

Taking suo moto cognizance of the rape and murder of a PG trainee doctor in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the Supreme Court on Sunday announced it would take up the matter on August 20.

The incident has triggered a massive protest across India with people demanding justice for the victim.

Kolkata, the epicentre of the protest, witnessed multiple demonstrations over the weekend.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, Justice J B Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra have decided to hear the case.
