In a shocking development, senior Haryana IPS officer Puran Kumar died by suicide at his Sector 11 residence in Chandigarh on Tuesday afternoon, officials confirmed.

The 2001-batch officer reportedly shot himself with his service weapon.

Police said the incident occurred around 1:30 pm, and teams from the Sector 11 police station immediately rushed to the spot after receiving the information.

“At around 1.30 pm, we received information at Sector 11 police station. The SHO, Sector 11, and his team inspected the scene. A reported suicide had taken place... The body has been identified as that of Puran Kumar, IPS officer,” Chandigarh Senior Superintendent of Police Kanwardeep Kaur told reporters.

She added that a team from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) is inspecting the spot and that investigations are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death.

When asked whether a suicide note had been found, the SSP said, “A CFSL team is inspecting the spot and investigations are on.”

Puran Kumar was a 2001-batch IPS officer and had recently been posted as Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) at the Police Training Centre (PTC) in Sunaria, Rohtak, on September 29.

His wife, Aman P. Kumar, an IAS officer, is currently in Japan on an official trip and is expected to return to India tomorrow evening, officials said.

The reason behind the officer’s suicide remains unclear, and police said that no foul play is suspected so far, though forensic and ballistic examinations are being conducted as part of the probe.
