Kolkata, Oct 12 (IBNS) The General Manager, South Eastern Railway (SER), Radhey Shyam, on Monday inaugurated the third PIT line with 26 coaches’ capacity at Padmapukur to enhance the maintenance capacity there in addition to two existing PIT lines of 26 coaches each.

This is an effort to accommodate more number of extra special trains for maintenance. During the current festive season with the introduction of 139 pairs of Puja Special Trains, demand for maintenance facilities has increased to a greater extent.

To provide better, cleaner and improved passenger services, South Eastern Railway has been taking various infrastructural developmental works at Shalimar and Santragachi areas.  Commissioning of this third PIT at Padmapukur is one of them.

Shyam also inaugurated the Electronic Interlocking System of Train Operation at Shalimar to replace traditional Hand-Lever Frame of Interlocking System of Train Operation.

To make train movement improved, safer and speedier this new system is introduced.

The introduction of this new electronic interlocking system will give a quantum leap in signalling movement from 25 to 91 signalling routes.  It will lead to centralized operations in place of earlier cabin system. The entire yard has been track circuited which enhanced safety.

The new system is provided with VDU (Visual Display Unit) too make train operations more convenient and user-friendly.
