Singaporean legal authorities have sentenced two Indian tourists to five years and one month in prison, along with 12 strokes of the cane, for allegedly robbing and assaulting two sex workers in hotel rooms.

The two Indians were identified as Arokkiyasami Daison, 23, and Rajendran Mayilarasan, 27.

They were sentenced to five years and one month in jail and given 12 strokes of the cane after pleading guilty to voluntarily causing hurt while robbing the victims, reported The Straits Times.

The court heard that the duo had arrived in Singapore for a holiday on April 24.

According to reports, while they were walking in Little India, an unknown man approached them and asked if they would want service from sex workers.

He provided them with the contact numbers of two sex workers and left the spot.

Arokkiyasami told Rajendran they needed money and suggested they contact the women and rob them in a hotel room. Rajendran agreed, reported The Straits Times.

They arranged to meet the first woman in a hotel room in Jalan Besar at around 6 p.m. that day.

In the room, they tied the victim’s hands and legs with clothing and slapped her face. They proceeded to rob her of her jewellery, $2,000 in cash, her passport, and her bank cards, reported The Straits Times.

They decided to meet another sex worker at a hotel in Desker Road around 11 p.m. that night.

After the woman showed up, they dragged her by her arms and robbed her. Rajendran also covered the victim’s mouth to stop her from shouting, the newspaper reported.

The Indian tourist duo stole $800 in cash, two mobile phones, and a passport from her before threatening her against leaving the hotel room, as they would return.

Through an interpreter, Arokkiyasami said as quoted by the newspaper: “My father passed away last year. I have three sisters, one of them is married, and we have no money. That is why we did this.”

Rajendran said his wife and child were suffering financially.
