SP leader suspended for seeking Rajya Sabha nomination of Memon's wife

New Dehi, Aug 1 (IBNS) The Samajwadi Party on Saturday suspended its Maharashtra unit vice president Mohammed Farooq Ghosi for seeking a Rajya Sabha nomination for 1993 Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon's widow Raheen.

Ghosi said he would accept whatever party has decided for him but does not regret his statement.

In a letter to Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, Ghosi had said: ""Raheen was in jail for many years. How much she would have suffered. Today I find Raheen helpless and there are many such Muslims in the country who find themselves helpless and for whom we have to fight for. We should make Raheen a Rajya Sabha MP and make her the voice of weak and helpless people."

His request came just two days after  Yakub Memon was hanged at Nagpur Central Jail.

Ghosi, however, later admitted that  the  timing of the letter was wrong. "I should not have written a letter to SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav. I understand this was not a proper time to write such a letter."

But he was firm on his demand for Rajya Sabha berth for Memon's widow.

Memon was hanged on July 30 following a prolonged legal battle.
