Sukhbir Badal attacked by Nihang Sikh with kirpan at Maharashtra gurdwara; assailant detained
Mumbai/IBNS: Former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal was attacked in Maharashtra's Nanded on Thursday, media reports said.
Badal was reportedly attacked with a kirpan at Mata Sahib Gurdwara.
The attacker has been identified as Jaspal Singh, a Nihang Sikh.
Singh, who has reportedly been working at the gurdwara for the past two years, has been taken into custody.
Badal injured, security personnel also hurt
Badal was rushed to a private hospital following the attack. His security personnel, Santosh Kendre, was also injured.
According to NDTV, quoting sources, the attack took place while Badal was walking down the stairs of the gurdwara.
He was accompanied by his wife and Akali Dal MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal when the incident occurred.

Attacker allegedly aimed at Badal's stomach
According to reports, the attacker allegedly wanted to stab Badal in the stomach but he survived due to the intervention of his security personnel.
A video circulating on social media showed Badal walking with a saffron cloth wrapped around his hands.
The Akali Dal chief received stitches on his hand following the attack. The injuries were reportedly not life-threatening.
Badal had survived attack in 2024
Earlier, in December 2024, Badal had survived an assassination attempt outside the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
The gunman involved in that incident was arrested.
