Madurai/UNI: One person died in a massive fire that broke out in a Jewellery shop on the busy South Masi Street in Madurai city.

The incident happened Monday night.

Police said here on Tuesday that the deceased was identified as Motilal (49), an employee and close relative of the owner of Janaki Jewellers.

After the fire broke out at the closing time of the shop, the employees and customers escaped and alerted the police and the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services department.

Fire tenders rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze after a couple of hours of battle.

Motilal, who was trapped on the third floor of the shop, was rescued by the fire personnel in an unconscious manner with burn injuries.

He was rushed to the Government Rajaji Hospital, where the doctors declared him dead.

The police have registered a case and are investigating to find out the cause of the fire.
