Baharampur/IBNS: Three people, including two children, were killed after a passenger train collided with a school van in West Bengal's Murshidabad district on Friday morning, according to media reports.

The accident took place at around 7 am near Baharampur when the van was carrying students to school.

Several injured, admitted to hospital

Several others, including the van driver, sustained injuries in the collision and were rushed to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital for treatment.

Two railway staff suspended

The Railways has suspended two employees—a gateman and a supervisor—for alleged negligence in connection with the incident.

Officials said strict action would be taken against those found responsible for the accident.

Special Investigation Team formed

The Railways has constituted a 10-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), headed by the Additional Divisional Railway Manager (ADRM), to investigate the circumstances leading to the collision, NDTV reported.

The probe is expected to examine whether there was any lapse in safety protocols at the level crossing and determine accountability for the tragedy.

'Negligence will not be tolerated'

In an X post, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has said "negligence will not be tolerated" assuring people of the "strictest possible action" against the guilty.

Adhikari has "directed the administration to provide all possible assistance to the injured and the affected families".

Adhikari said minister Gouri Sankar Ghosh has already visited the hospital and is monitoring the situation.

Besides, Health Minister Dr. Sharadwat Mukherjee is ensuring the injured receive the best possible medical treatment, the Chief Minister added.
