UP govt hikes minimum wages after violent protests in Noida

Noida/IBNS: Violent protests by workers in Noida have led to a breakthrough, with the Uttar Pradesh government announcing revised minimum wages across categories on Tuesday, according to reports.

The wage hike will be implemented with retrospective effect from April 1.

The decision was approved by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath late Monday night, Gautam Budh Nagar District Magistrate Medha Roopam said as reported by Hindustan Times.

Protests turn violent

Tension flared in Noida’s Phase 2 area on Monday as a workers’ protest demanding higher wages spiralled into violence.

The agitation was led by employees from the Hosiery Complex in the industrial hub.

The situation escalated with incidents of stone-pelting, vandalism, and arson targeting vehicles and property.

A heavy police deployment was rushed to the area, and tear gas shells were used to disperse the crowd.

What triggered the unrest?

The protests came a day after a meeting chaired by District Magistrate Medha Roopam with senior labour officials, including the Principal Secretary (Labour) and Labour Commissioner, to address worker welfare concerns.

Key demands by workers

The protesting workers have been demanding:

  • Salary hike and bonus payments
  • Timely payment of wages
  • Overtime compensation
  • Weekly offs
  • Formation of a sexual harassment committee
  • Grievance redressal mechanism
  • Issuance of salary slips

The situation is now under control, with authorities closely monitoring developments in the area.
