Vijay’s TVK seeks Congress, Left support after falling short of majority in Tamil Nadu

Chennai/IBNS: The political fabric of Tamil Nadu is undergoing a tectonic shift with actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) reaching out to the Congress and Left parties to form the government following a stunning debut in the 2026 Assembly polls.

TVK’s Stunning Debut

Breaking the long-standing bipolar contest between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, falling short of the majority mark of 118 in the 234-member Assembly.

Alliance Outreach for Majority

In a bid to form the government, TVK has reached out to DMK allies—Indian National Congress (5 seats), Communist Party of India (Marxist) (2), Communist Party of India (2) and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (2), according to reports.

Congress Extends Conditional Support

The Congress has extended conditional support to TVK, stating it would back the single largest party provided “communal forces” are kept out of the alliance.

DMK, AIADMK Alliances Falter

The DMK, which was in power, managed to win only 59 seats. The AIADMK-BJP combine secured 47 seats.

Vijay Stakes Claim to Form Govt

Vijay is set to meet Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar to stake claim to form the government.

The Governor said Vijay has informed him that he commands majority support.

Swearing-In Likely Soon

Reports suggest Vijay is likely to take oath as Chief Minister on Thursday.
