Actress Sumita Sanyal passes away

Kolkata, July 9 (IBNS): Bengali actress Sumita Sanyal, who was known for her performance in several Hindi and Bengali films in the 60s and 70s, has passed away.

She was 71.

After she got a chance in Bengali film "Khokababur Pratyabartan", Sanyal acted in more than 40 films in Bengali including Dilip Kumar Saira Banu starrer Sagina Mahato and in the lead role in Kuheli alongside Biswajit and Sandhya Roy.

She also has acted in a number of Hindi films, the most notable of which was Anand in 1970 opposite Amitabh Bachchan.

Her performance as an aspiring actress in Satyajit Ray's Nayak- starring late matinee idol Uttam Kumar- is one of the memorable in the minds of Bengali cine-goers. 

Mourning her demise, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted: "Saddened at the passing of veteran actress Sumita Sanyal. My condolences to her family, friends and fans."

Bengali actor Prosenjit Chatterjee posted: "Saddened to hear about the demise of the veteran actress Sumita Sanyal May her soul rest in peace."
