Los Angeles/IBNS: The trailer of Verity, the upcoming psychological thriller based on Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel of the same name, was unveiled by the makers on Tuesday.

Directed by Michael Showalter, the film stars Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett in the lead roles.

Dakota Johnson enters a disturbing world

The trailer follows Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson), a struggling writer who is hired by Jeremy Crawford (Josh Hartnett) to complete the book series of his wife, bestselling author Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway), after Verity is left unable to work following an accident.

As Lowen moves into the Crawford home, she begins exploring Verity’s work and personal belongings.

A manuscript reveals dark secrets

Lowen soon discovers a disturbing autobiographical manuscript containing horrifying revelations about Verity, her family and Jeremy.

As she reads through the manuscript, Lowen finds herself questioning whether Verity is confessing to horrific acts or deliberately manipulating those around her through her writing.

The trailer increasingly blurs the lines between truth and fiction, attraction and manipulation, as Lowen becomes entangled in the Crawford family's dark secrets.

A dangerous triangle

The trailer promises a dark, seductive and unsettling mystery centred on secrets, obsession and a potentially dangerous triangle between Lowen, Verity and Jeremy.

Lowen and Jeremy's growing attraction adds another layer of tension to the story, while Verity's presence continues to loom over their relationship.

Anne Hathaway's unsettling portrayal

Anne Hathaway's portrayal of Verity, who appears incapacitated following her accident but remains psychologically threatening, is among the trailer's biggest highlights.

The trailer also mixes romantic and erotic moments with disturbing psychological-horror imagery, particularly surrounding the complicated relationship between Lowen, Verity and Jeremy.

One of the trailer's most shocking moments comes when Lowen appears to kiss Jeremy, only for the scene to take a disturbing turn involving Verity.

Release date

Verity is slated for a theatrical release on October 2, 2026.
