Mumbai/IBNS: Cricket South Africa (CSA) director of Cricket Graeme Smith has backed former Indian cricket captain and current Indian cricket board chief Sourav Ganguly as the next International Cricket Council (ICC) president, the position which is due to be vacated soon.

In a recent comment, Smith, who led the South African team as a skipper for a long time, said, "I have dealt with Sourav for a long time. I think the president of the ICC now becoming a very key position in terms of how the game progress and progress at the right level.

From our perspective, it would be great to see a cricket man like Sourav Ganguly may be get into the president's role of the ICC. I think that would be good for the game, it's good for the modern game as well. He has played at the highest level. He is respected. His leadership I think would be key to to us going forward."

Presently, ICC is headed by former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Shashank Manohar whose term is set to end this month.

Ganguly, who had an illustrious career both as an Indian batsman and captain, became the BCCI president last year after serving the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) for few years as a chief.

However, the southpaw due to the new rules of the Indian cricket will have his BCCI role expired before August this year.
