Kohli, bowlers help India beat Australia by 37 runs

Adelaide, Jan 26 (IBNS): Virat Kohli smashed unbeaten 90 and the Indian bowlers bowled tight and took wickets at regular intervals to help defeat Australia 37 runs in the first T20 match of the series here on Tuesday.

Batting first, India posted 188 for three in their 20 overs and then it were bowlers who took the task of beating the hosts as they bowled out Australia for 151 runs.

India spinners took advantage of the wicket and it was Ravindra Jadeja who brought India back in the match after skipper Aaron Finch (44) was trying to run away with the match.

Finch hammered four boundaries and two sixes in his 33 -ball innings.

Ravindra Jadeja took quick wickets of Steven Smith (21) and Travis Head  (2) to pull India back in the match strongly. R Ashwin dismissed Finch to nearly end all hopes for Australia.

Ashish Nehra and Yuvraj Singh played for the national side after long time, while the Delhi bowler picked up a wicket, Singh only bowled a over to give away 10 runs.

Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, who made his debut for India with this match, picked up two wickets each.

Australia were bowled out for 151 runs in 19.3 overs.

A heroic unbeaten  55-ball 90 runs knock by India's Test skipper Virat Kohli helped India post a competitive 188 runs for the loss of three wickets in the first T20 match against Australia.

Rohit Sharma made a solid start for India with his 20-ball 31 runs innings where he hammered four boundaries and a six.

It was Shane Watson, who put some pressure on the Indian batting line-up, as he picked up Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan (5) in the same over.

Kohli and Suresh Raina (41) added 134 runs in the third wicket partnership where it was the Test skipper who scored maximum of the runs.

Raina, arrived in Australia for the T20 series, took sometime to adjust to the conditions and hit three boundaries and a six in his 34-ball knock.

James Faulkner picked up the wicket of Raina to break the partnership at the end.

Indian skipper MS Dhoni (11) played a short but crucial innings where he smashed a boundary and an over over boundary each to help India score 188 for three in 20 overs.

Dhoni and Kohli added quick 13 runs partnership in the end.

India took 1-0 lead in the series.
