Mumbai/Birmingham, Aug 3 (IBNS): Former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar on Friday appreciated the heroic 149 runs knock by skipper Virat Kohli against England.

Tendulkar called Kohli's innings as an 'important knock'.

"A very important knock by @ImVkohli. Lovely way to set up the Test series. Congrats on your Test hundred. #ENGvIND ," Sachin Tendulkar tweeted.

A spectacular single-handed batting performance by skipper Virat Kohli has rescued India from a humiliating first innings total in the opening Test match against England at Edgbaston here on Thursday.

Riding on Kohli's 149-run knock, India ended their first innings at 274 in reply to England's 287.

In England's second innings, the hosts ended the day's play at nine runs for the loss of a wicket.

England have already lost the wicket of former skipper Alastair Cook (0).

Kohli impressed his fans as he smashed 22 boundaries and a six in his 225-ball knock.
