Steven Gerrard retires from int'l football

London, July 21 (IBNS) The Football Association (FA) on Monday announced English footballer Steven Gerrard has announced his decision to retire from international duty.

Gerrard has won 114 caps for his country in his 14-year England career.

"After a lot of agonising, I've decided to step out of the England fold and retire from international duty," he told TheFA.com.

"It was a very difficult decision to make, it is something that I have been contemplating for a long time, and not just since the end of the World Cup," he said.

"It's a decision I've taken very seriously. It's swung both ways at times and I've had to take an awful lot of advice from people who are close to me," the Liverpool star said.

"It's been a really tough decision, certainly one of the toughest I've had to make since I turned professional at 18," he said.

Gerrard made his last international appearance against Costa Rica at the World Cup last month.
