20 Afghan police officers killed in an attack plotted by Taliban

Kabul, June 13 (IBNS): At least 20 police officers have been killed in a Taliban attack in Afghanistan’s southern Helmand province, officials said on Saturday.

“The attacks, which began late Friday night, hit police checkpoints in the Musa Qala district, long a Taliban stronghold. The attack wounded at least 10 officers”, said Mohammad Ismail Hotak, the head of province’s joint coordination of police and military operations.

Taliban also seemed to have suffered high casualties, he said.

“The battle was ongoing Saturday and reinforcement had been sent from other districts. Most of the checkpoints that had been attacked were small, just two or three men," said Hotak

Taliban claimed responsibility for the attacks.

According to reports, the militants have been targeting vulnerable police checkpoints across the country.

There were similar attacks reported last month in Helmand’s Naw Zad district where at least 19 police officers were  killed.
