200,000 Syrian refugees return from Lebanon since 2017: report

Beirut, May 11 (Xinhua/UNI) Lebanon's General Security said that the number of Syrian refugees who have returned from Lebanon to Syria since 2017 reached 200,000, Asharq Al-Awsat local newspaper reported on Saturday.

The report said that the return of Syrian refugees organized by Lebanon's General Security in coordination with Syrian authorities has increased in 2018 but slowed down recently due to the beginning of the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

Sources at Lebanon's General Security told the newspaper that the process of return is still adopted by Lebanese authorities and trips to Syria will increase again after the end of Ramadan and during the summer.

More than 1 million Syrian refugees are registered with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Lebanon, while the Lebanese government estimated the true number of Syrians in the country at 1.5 million.

To facilitate the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland, Russia has drafted a strategy and presented it to the Lebanese authorities.

The strategy aims at securing the return of 890,000 Syrian refugees to their homeland.
