35th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre marked globally

A large section of people across the globe marked the  35th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre with several events organised in various parts of the world.

Marking the occasion, World Uyghur Congress posted on X: " The World Uyghur Congress commemorates the 35th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre."

In a statement published on X, the group said: "

Canadian Friends of Hong Kong organized a memorial event in North York, Ontario, where 1,000 people assembled at Mel Lastman Square to note the occasion.

"Over 1,000 gathered in the Mel Lastman Square in North York, Ontario for the 35th memorial of the #Tiananmen Square Massacre and to condemn Beijing’s political persecution & brutal suppression of democracy in #HongKong," the  Canadian Friends of Hong Kong posted on X.

Another event was reportedly held in Scotland's Edinburgh where participants honoured the victims.

In what is known as the Tiananmen Square Massacre, troops armed with assault rifles and accompanied by tanks fired at the demonstrators and those trying to block the military's advance into Tiananmen Square.

The protests started on 15 April and were forcibly suppressed on 4 June when the government declared martial law and sent the People's Liberation Army to occupy parts of central Beijing.

Estimates of the death toll vary from several hundred to several thousand, with thousands more wounded.
