Aybak, Afghanistan, Apr 22 (Xinhua): About eight laborers died of suffocation at a coal mine pit in Afghanistan's northern province of Samangan on Sunday, a local official said Monday.

The laborers were working at the coal mine in Dara-i-Suf-i-Bala, west of provincial capital Aybak, when a poisonous gas leaked and accumulated, suffocating them to death late on Sunday, head of provincial council Raz Mohammad told Xinhua.

He said next-of-kin of the victims were notified after the incident.

Coal mines in the province are notorious for their unsafe working condition.

On April 9, six laborers were killed and another injured as part of a coal mine collapsed in neighboring Dara-i-Suf Payan district.
