Kabul: Unknown gunmen set a school on fire in the Taleqan city of Afghanistan's northern Takhar province, media reports said.

Armed men have set on fire a high school named Abu Osman Taleqani, located in the provincial capital at around 3:30 on Thursday morning, Jawad Hijri, a provincial spokesperson told Khaama Press.

The school burnt today was a famous and old school in the city with around 3,000 students, Hijri added.

Hijri added that upon the arrival of the fire brigade, unfortunately, most parts of the school along with the documents were damaged and burnt.

Police have started investigating the matter.

No group has claimed responsibility for the incident so far.
