Australia: Police arrest one person over Israeli student's killing

Melbourne, Jan 18 (IBNS): The police have arrested a man in connection with the killing of a 21-year-old Israeli student in Melbourne city of Australia.

The Body of Aiia Maasarwe was found near La Trobe University in the city.

"The 20-year-old was arrested in Greensborough by local police working in partnership with homicide detectives about 11.20am," the Victoria Police said in a statement.

The police said the arrest follows an extensive investigation into Aiia’s death following the discovery of her body near Main Drive and Plenty Road in Bundoora on Wednesday at about 7am.

The police did not give any further details on the arrested person but thanked the public for their support.

According to media reports,Aiia Maasarwe's sister, with whom she was talking over the phone at the time of the attack, alerted the police.

The La Trobe University student's body was found partially clothed in bushes early Wednesday in Bundoora, a suburb about 16 kilometers (10 miles) from Melbourne's center, CNN affiliate Nine News Australia reported.

University  condoles:

The university condoled the death of Aiia Maasarwe.

Vice-Chancellor of La Trobe University tweeted: "On behalf of @latrobe, and the Bundoora community, I express my deepest sympathies to the family, friends and teachers of Aiia Maasarwe.This is a tragic event that has deeply affected us all. We will do all we can to ensure that this never happens again."
