Bangladesh: Khaleda Zia get four months bail

Dhaka, Mar 12 (IBNS): BNP supremo Khaleda Zia was given a four-month bail by the Bangladesh High Court on Monday, media reports said.

Zia, who had earlier served as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, got the bail in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case.

A Bangladesh court last month found her guilty and handed her five years in prison.

Now, there is no legal bar to let Khaleda walk out of prison on bail, Advocate Sagir Hossain Leon, a lawyer for the BNP chief, told The Daily Star after the High Court ruling.

The bail order was passed by a bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Shahidul Karim.

The bail was granted to Zia in response to a petition moved by her before the High Court last month.

The report published by The Daily Star said her bail was considered on four grounds – her short sentencing of five years, health condition, her facing trial proceedings and that the case records have reached the High Court.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was on Feb 8 sentenced to five years in jail as a Bangladesh court convicted her in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case, reports said.

Her son Tarique Rahman and four others got 10 years' jail term in connection with the same case.

Zia  was found guilty of embezzlement of  252,000 Dollars from a trust created for an orphanage in the name of her late husband and Bangladesh's former President Ziaur Rahman.
