Barbie row: Canadian MP attacked for sexist remarks

Conservative MP Gerry Ritz had made the comment on Twitter during an online exchange of a climate change report, according to a BBC report.

However, after receiving unfavourable reactions from the users, he apologised and tweeted that it was not reflective of the role the minister plays.

"I apologize for the use of Barbie, it is not reflective of the role the Minister plays,' Ritz's tweet read.

Reacting to the whole fiasco, the McKenna thanked her supporters for 'having her back', while tweeting, "Thanks to everyone who has my back. I love my job. But some days it's hard. It matters that you call people out."

The debate started after Ritz had replied to someone's query, tweeting, "Has anyone told our climate Barbie!"

In her salvo McKenna had asked if the MP uses the same sexist tone to address his mother and sister.

"Do you use that sexist language about your daughter, mother, sister?" the Environment Minister asked.

The lawmaker added, "We need more women in politics. Your sexist comments won't stop us."

The incident also received widespread criticism from other ministers, who said that there was no room for sexist behaviour in Canadian politics.

Condemning the act, Heritage Minister Melanie Joly said, "Sexism is unacceptable."
