Brazil/IBNS: Jair Bolsonaro, the former far-right president of Brazil, gave testimony to federal police on Wednesday regarding the January 8 riots carried out by his supporters who were against the government. reported AFP.

An investigation into Jair Bolsonaro's alleged involvement in orchestrating and encouraging the January 8 riots aimed at overthrowing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is underway.

The former Brazilian far-right leader is being probed for his alleged role in masterminding the unrest stated AFP.

After spending three months in Florida, Bolsonaro returned to Brazil in late March and has consistently denied any involvement in the January 8 riots.

Bolsonaro arrived at the federal police headquarters in Brasilia in a vehicle with tinted windows and did not address the press.

The election held last October saw Lula narrowly defeat Bolsonaro in a contentious and divisive contest.

Following Lula's inauguration, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters forcefully entered Congress, the Supreme Court, and the presidential palace in Brasilia in January.

The rioting resulted in destruction of property, including vandalized artworks and smashed windows, and demands for Lula's removal by military intervention.

The riots were reminiscent of the January 6, 2021, riots by supporters of Bolsonaro's political role model, former US President Donald Trump, in Washington.

To date, around 1,800 people have been arrested in connection with the unrest.
