Toronto, Mar 8 (IBNS): Toronto Mayor John Tory and other members of Toronto City Council will be joined by Rem Langan, a member of the Canadian Paralympic Committee's board of directors, and Canadian Paralympic medalists at Toronto City Hall on Thursday afternoon (local time) to raise the flag of the Canadian Paralympic Committee, media reports said.

The event will mark the opening of the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games to  demonstrate support for the Canadian athletes competing in PyeongChang, South Korea.

The 2018 Winter Paralympics, officially known as the XII Paralympic Winter Games, is being held in Pyeongchang, South Korea, and is an international winter sports athletic event for athletes with disabilities.

The flag raising ceremony will be held on the podium roof and then the flag will  be moved to the Queen Street flagpole on Nathan Phillips Square, Toronto on March 9.

During the flag rising ceremony, Tory is scheduled to proclaim March 9, 2018  as Paralympic Winter Games Day in Toronto.

The flag will fly on the Queen Street flagpole until end of PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Games on March 18.

The 2018 emblem symbolizes a world open to everyone and combines the image of ice and snow, winter sports stars (athletes), and people from all over the world, coming together in PyeongChang.

Fifty five Canadian athletes, the largest Canadian athlete delegation to compete at the Paralympic Winter Games so far, will participate in all five disciplines: Para alpine, Para ice hockey, Para nordic (cross-country and biathlon), Para snowboarding and wheelchair curling.

Ontario  will be represented by 19 athletes; Erin Latimer (para alpine) and Greg Westlake (para ice hockey) are from Toronto.
