Xinjiang: The Chinese government has imposed a ban on residents from leaving Xinjiang region amid rise in COVID-19 cases.

The region has been witnessing rising agony among people who are facing food shortages and plunging incomes.

On Tuesday, the region – home to 22 million people, many belonging to ethnic minorities – reported 38 new asymptomatic Covid cases, reports CNN.

Xinjiang’s Vice Chairman Liu Sushe vowed to 'strengthen the control of cross-regional personnel and insist that people do not leave the region unless it is necessary', reports CNN.

Liu added that Xinjiang will strengthen control measures in airports, train stations and checkpoints to prevent the virus from spreading to other parts of the country.

China, which is one of the largest economies in the world, has been imposing strict restrictions over the past couple of months to tackle COVID-19 situation.
